Naming of SCRs
Why SCR is named as SCR?
There are two explainations:
First, let’s see some related semiconductor terms:
Semiconductor (Initial letter is S)
Controlled (Initial letter is C)
Rectifier (Initial letter is R)
Combining the initial letters of the three terms together comes to SCR, which means semiconductor controlled rectifier.
Semiconductor often refers to silicon wafer:
Silicon
Controlled
Rectifier.
Combining the initial letters of the three terms together comes to SCR, which means silicon controlled rectifier.
With this naming principle, each manufacturer has its own naming method:
Motorola, one of the precursors in this field, takes the capital M to represent Motorola and CR to represent controlled rectifier, forming MCR, the first-generation naming of SCR. Typical models include MCR100-6, MCR100-8, etc.
Japanese Mitsubishi (now Renesas Technology) Company remove the letter S from SCR and name the device directly with CR. Typical models include CR02AM, CR03AM, etc.
